Small businesses face rising cyber threats and ransomware
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are facing a significant increase in cyber threats, according to 2025 analysis from Verizon. Data indicates that SMEs are victims of breaches nearly four times more frequently than large organizations.
Approximately 88% of these breaches are linked to ransomware, which locks data and demands payment. Attackers often target smaller companies because they possess valuable banking data, client lists, and access to larger partner networks, yet frequently lack the staff or backup systems to monitor network behavior effectively.
Common methods used by attackers include social engineering (18%) and stolen credentials (33%). Additionally, about 12% of authentication attempts at small organizations involve ‘credential stuffing,’ where automated attempts are made using previously stolen passwords. These attacks often remain undetected for weeks as attackers observe communications to identify payment approvers before acting.
