Small cell lung cancer treatment sees breakthroughs with new immunotherapy

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC), a highly aggressive malignancy characterized by rapid progression and high recurrence rates, is seeing significant therapeutic breakthroughs through new immunotherapy and targeted drug developments.

Recent clinical advancements include the success of the DeLLphi-305 study, where AstraZeneca and Amgen utilized tarlatamab, a DLL3/CD3 bispecific T-cell engager, as a first-line maintenance treatment for extensive-stage SCLC. Additionally, Hanson Pharmaceutical reported positive results for its B7-H3 ADC, HS-20093, in second-line treatment for recurrent SCLC, achieving a median overall survival of 18.5 months.

Medical experts note that while PD-L1 inhibitors have improved first-line outcomes, the primary challenge remains managing recurrence and drug resistance. New technologies such as Antibody-Drug Conjugates (ADCs), T-cell engagers (TCE), and various molecular targets like DLL3, B7-H3, and TROP2 are providing new options for patients who previously faced limited survival prospects after initial treatment failure.
