Small modular reactors emerge as a growing nuclear energy trend
Small modular reactors (SMRs) and microreactors are emerging as a significant trend in nuclear energy production. These reactors are smaller and less powerful than conventional plants, typically capped at 300 megawatts, but offer greater flexibility and potential cost savings through mass production.
While much of the technology is still in development, some applications are already operational. In Russia, the Akademik Lomonosov, a floating nuclear power plant in Pevek, has been in service since May 2020. It utilizes two KLT-40S pressurized water reactors providing a total of 77 MW.
In the private sector, companies like NuScale and Oklo are developing next-generation technologies. NuScale focuses on SMRs, with commercial deployment expected in the early 2030s. Oklo is developing microreactors designed for remote areas, aiming for deployment in 2027 or 2028. Oklo’s design utilizes a closed-loop system for uranium pellets, allowing for refueling intervals of approximately 10 years.
