Small plane crash in Weinheim kills two during summer festival

A small aircraft crashed on Sunday afternoon during a summer festival at the Weinheim/Bergstraße airfield in Germany. The accident occurred around 16:45 local time during an approach to the runway.

Two men, a 67-year-old suspected pilot and a 76-year-old passenger, died in the crash. Additionally, a 40-year-old woman and a 3-year-old child were transported to a hospital with severe injuries. The crash took place near the border between Baden-Württemberg and Hesse, in the municipality of Viernheim.

The event, organized by the Weinheim Air Sports Club, was well-attended by thousands of visitors. Following the impact, the festival was immediately interrupted, and all aircraft in the vicinity were ordered to land. The Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation and criminal police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash. The Darmstadt public prosecutor's office has ordered the seizure of the wreckage.
