Small retailers adapt to deposit return systems

Small convenience stores face unique logistical challenges when implementing waste segregation and deposit return systems. Due to limited floor space, smaller staff counts, and minimal storage facilities, these retailers must choose between manual collection and automated solutions like reverse vending machines.

A study by the Association of Convenience Stores involving 1,100 independent retailers indicates that automation is not always the preferred route. Among retailers with a defined plan, 12% intended to accept packaging manually, while only 5% planned to invest in collection machines.

Effective implementation depends on several factors, including customer volume, beverage sales structure, and available storage. While machines can streamline high-volume locations, manual collection allows small shops to participate without significant infrastructure costs. However, retailers must carefully plan for the volume of empty containers, as PET bottles occupy substantial space, requiring efficient logistics for frequent pickups.
