Smart charging reduces electric vehicle costs in the Netherlands

Data from energy provider Tibber indicates that smart charging for electric vehicles (EVs) in the Netherlands significantly reduces costs compared to fossil fuels. In July, charging an EV for 100 kilometers cost an average of 2.76 euros when utilizing smart charging, whereas gasoline averaged 18.30 euros and diesel averaged 15.40 euros for the same distance.

Smart charging achieves these savings by automatically scheduling charging during periods of low demand or high renewable energy availability, such as at night or during peak solar and wind production. This practice also helps alleviate pressure on the electrical grid during peak hours. Some drivers even reported net profits per kilometer due to specific renewable energy credit schemes.

As EV adoption grows, the focus is shifting toward home charging infrastructure. Installing home charging points requires careful consideration of household power capacity, especially when combined with other high-consumption appliances like heat pumps or induction cooktops.
