SMART CJS to close Prebend Centre in Bedford

SMART CJS, a charity supporting individuals facing homelessness, has announced the closure of its Prebend Centre in Bedford. The facility is scheduled to close on Thursday, 1 October 2026.

The decision follows a shift in local funding priorities and the transfer of commissioned services to the Bedford Borough Council. The charity noted that securing long-term funding to sustain the centre has become increasingly difficult.

To ensure continuity of care, most of the SMART team will transfer to the council to continue working with current service users. Until the final day of operation, the centre will remain focused on supporting its users and assisting their transition into the council’s redesigned service pathways.
