Smart electrochromic glass with integrated solar cells introduced for vehicles

Automotive component manufacturers have introduced a new generation of smart, electrochromic glass featuring integrated transparent solar cells. This technology allows vehicle windows and panoramic roofs to serve as power generators while managing cabin temperature.

The electrochromic layers utilize liquid crystals embedded between tempered glass layers. When triggered by sensors or user command, the crystals shift to darken the glass, blocking up to 99% of harmful UV and infrared radiation.

Additionally, the integration of microscopic solar cells—based on perovskite or organic polymers—allows the glass to harvest energy from the invisible spectrum of light. This captured energy can power auxiliary batteries and electronic systems. A key benefit is the ability to run ventilation and air circulation systems while the vehicle is parked and the engine is off, utilizing the energy generated by the glass itself to prevent excessive cabin heat.
