Smart EX users can travel without registered IC cards

Passengers using the Smart EX service for Shinkansen reservations can still travel even if they forget the registered IC card, such as Suica, at home. Because payments are processed via the registered credit card at the time of booking, users do not need to purchase a new ticket.

There are two primary ways to resolve this situation at the station. First, passengers can exchange their reservation for a paper ticket at a ticket machine or station window by using a ‘receipt code’ (available via the Smart EX reservation list) and their password. Alternatively, users can update their reservation to a different IC card, such as PASMO or ICOCA, or a mobile IC service, provided the new card is one of the ten compatible types.

To avoid issues, passengers are advised to ensure they can access their receipt code before boarding, as being unable to display it may necessitate purchasing a full-price ticket.
