Smart glasses test reveals potential for academic cheating

Jukka Isokangas, a showroom manager at telecommunications company Elisa, conducted a test using Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses to demonstrate how easily AI-powered eyewear could be used for cheating in an academic setting.

During the test, which involved a Finnish middle school history exam, the smart glasses correctly answered four out of five multiple-choice questions on the first attempt. The AI also provided competent answers to open-ended questions. While the glasses can understand Finnish text, the user commands and responses are provided in English.

Isokangas noted that using a wearable device like a ring or bracelet to scroll through a screen might be more discreet than speaking aloud during an exam. Under Finnish education law, the use of smart devices, including AI-integrated glasses, is prohibited in classrooms and during exams, with a formal ban on smart devices set to take effect in August 2025.
