Smart glasses used to secretly film women raise privacy concerns in Germany

Women in Germany have reported being filmed without consent using smart glasses that look like ordinary eyewear. One incident involved a woman at Hamburg's Alsterufer who discovered the video posted on TikTok, while another occurred at the Oktoberfest, captured by a self‑styled pickup‑artist influencer with millions of followers. The devices, marketed by companies such as Meta and Ray‑Ban, can record video and audio, and users can conceal the recording indicator light. Videos often carry the hashtag “rizz,” derived from “charisma,” and circulate on platforms like TikTok and Instagram.

Legal experts say current German criminal law does not adequately address the covert use of smart glasses, creating a gap in protection for victims. Manufacturers claim users must follow existing laws, and some have taken legal action against individuals who promote ways to bypass recording alerts. The cases highlight growing concerns about digital harassment and the need for updated privacy regulations.

The phenomenon has sparked debate over technology misuse, platform responsibility, and victim compensation, as one woman was reportedly asked to pay for the removal of the illicit video.
