Smart livestock technology in Spain highlighted by EU campaign

European Union initiatives are increasingly focusing on the digitalization of the agricultural sector, highlighting smart livestock projects in Spain. The European Commission has featured the Galician startup Innogando in its “The European Budget. Stronger Together” campaign to demonstrate the impact of regional investment.

Innogando, based in Abadín, developed “RUMI,” a smart collar that allows farmers to monitor animal location, behavior, and health—such as grazing, resting, or heat cycles—via a mobile application. Since 2021, the company has secured over 1.54 million euros in public funding linked to European programs for innovation, digitalization, and rural development. The technology currently has more than 25,000 active devices in Spain and Portugal.

Parallel to these hardware advancements, there is a growing movement toward sophisticated data management in the primary sector. Supported by Next Generation EU funds, initiatives in regions like Miranda de Ebro aim to help cooperatives and farms convert raw data from sensors and health records into actionable decisions. This shift aligns with European frameworks like GAIA-X and IDSA, which promote secure, interoperable data spaces that allow producers to maintain control over their information while improving sector-wide efficiency and competitiveness.
