Smart Ring Prototype Analyzes Sweat for Biochemical Markers
Scientists have created a laboratory prototype of a smart ring that continuously monitors biochemical indicators through sweat. The device can simultaneously detect glucose, ketones, vitamin C, uric acid, lactate and ethanol by analyzing sweat with passive osmotic sensing, eliminating the need for invasive blood draws.
Inside the ring are miniature biosensors, a flexible silver‑oxide battery that powers the unit for about 12 hours, and wireless electronics for data transmission. Individual calibration maintains measurement accuracy for up to two months, and testing showed glucose and ketone readings matching those of commercial glucometers and continuous glucose monitors. The prototype is not yet a commercial product but could open a new phase in personalized medicine.
