Smart TV settings to reduce electricity consumption

Modern smart televisions, particularly those utilizing LED and OLED technology, are theoretically more energy-efficient than older models. OLED screens, for instance, can reduce consumption by turning off individual pixels during dark scenes. However, factory settings often negate these benefits.

Manufacturers frequently use high-brightness profiles, such as ‘Vivid’ or ‘Dynamic’ modes, to make devices appear more impressive in retail displays. These settings maximize backlight and brightness, leading to higher energy usage and eye strain.

To reduce electricity consumption, users can implement several adjustments:

• Switch image profiles from ‘Vivid’ to more natural settings like ‘Cinema’, ‘Movie’, or ‘Eco’. • Enable ‘Auto Brightness’ or ambient light sensors to adjust intensity based on room lighting. • Use the ‘Screen Off’ feature when listening to music via streaming services like Spotify or YouTube Music, which allows the audio to play while the power-hungry panel is completely deactivated.
