SmartAsset study ranks U.S. cities for women in tech

A SmartAsset study evaluating 50 of the largest U.S. cities has identified the best and worst locations for women working in the technology sector. The evaluation utilized a composite score based on four key metrics: the gender pay gap, the percentage of women within the local tech workforce, tech employment concentration, and median earnings adjusted for regional price differences.

San Jose ranked as the top city for women in tech, with more than 10% of its workforce employed in the sector. While women in San Jose earn a median income of approximately $143,918 after regional price adjustments, they earn 80.5% of what their male counterparts make.

Detroit recorded the highest share of women in the tech workforce at 39.7%, making it the top-ranking location outside of the West Coast. Atlanta ranked fourth overall, with women making up 28.8% of the local tech workforce and earning 87.5% of men's earnings. Conversely, Bakersfield, California, was noted for having the largest pay disparity.
