Smartphone background activity poses privacy risks

Smartphones continue to exchange data with remote servers even when they are not actively being used. This background activity involves sending information such as IMEI codes, hardware serial numbers, SIM card details, system health status, and diagnostic logs to manufacturer servers.

While some data exchange is necessary for operating networks, updating operating systems, and synchronizing content, experts warn of privacy risks. According to Marijus Briedis, Technology Director at NordVPN, certain exchanges—such as persistent location tracking or advertising signals—can expose sensitive personal information without user knowledge. Even when GPS is disabled, devices may still transmit approximate location data through WiFi and Bluetooth identifiers, allowing companies to create long-term behavioral profiles.
