Experts explain that everyday charging habits can affect the lifespan of lithium‑ion smartphone batteries. They advise plugging the charger into the wall outlet before connecting the phone, and reversing the order when unplugging, to minimise voltage spikes. Using only original or certified chargers is recommended, as cheap adapters may not regulate voltage properly.

Modern batteries operate best when kept between roughly 20 % and 80 % charge. While leaving a phone on the charger overnight does not damage the battery because the device stops the charge at 100 %, repeated full‑charge cycles and exposure to high temperature – such as using intensive apps while charging or charging in direct sunlight – can accelerate wear. The so‑called “memory effect” no longer applies to current lithium‑ion or polymer cells, and a single long initial charge is unnecessary. Maintaining moderate charge levels and avoiding excess heat help prolong battery health over its intended multi‑year life.
