Smartphone battery health and energy consumption

Modern smartphones are generally safe to charge overnight due to built-in systems that prevent overcharging. Manufacturers like Apple and Samsung confirm that devices stop active charging once they reach 100 percent, though they may occasionally resume charging briefly to maintain the battery level.

However, keeping a lithium-ion battery at 100 percent for extended periods can accelerate wear due to higher electrical voltage. To mitigate this, many devices now include features like Apple’s ‘Optimized Battery Charging,’ which may delay full charging until shortly before the user typically wakes up.

Additionally, certain applications can significantly impact battery longevity. High-energy apps such as Instagram consume substantial power through continuous data loading, video playback, and background activity. Google has previously acknowledged issues regarding excessive battery drain by Instagram on certain Android devices.
