Smartphone battery life: Tips for charging and app management

Smartphone users can extend battery longevity and daily performance by adjusting charging habits and managing background applications.

For devices using lithium-ion batteries, such as Android phones, experts advise against letting the battery drain to 0%, as this is highly damaging to long-term health. It is recommended to maintain a charge level between 20% and 80% and to avoid leaving devices on chargers for extended periods, such as overnight, to prevent exposure to high voltage. Additionally, users should avoid exposing devices to extreme temperatures.

On iOS devices, background activity from apps like Google Maps, Spotify, and various video games can significantly drain power. Users can monitor usage through the Battery section in Settings to distinguish between 'On Screen' time and 'Background' usage. To conserve energy, users can disable 'Background App Refresh' in the General settings and limit 'Location Services' access to reduce continuous GPS consumption.
