Smartphone camera quality depends on more than megapixels
High megapixel counts in smartphone cameras do not inherently guarantee superior image quality. While a higher number of megapixels indicates greater resolution—useful for cropping and enlarging images—it does not ensure better color accuracy, efficient HDR, precise focus, low noise, or strong performance in low-light conditions.
Actual photographic quality depends on a complex combination of factors, including the physical size of the sensor, lens quality, optical stabilization, and software image processing. A larger sensor area is particularly beneficial for light intake, noise control, and dynamic range. Additionally, many high-resolution sensors utilize pixel binning, a technique that combines data from adjacent pixels to improve light capture, often resulting in a lower effective resolution, such as 12 MP, for the final saved image.
