Smartphone charging safety and battery health considerations

Experts and safety officials have highlighted both the electrical risks and the technical realities of leaving smartphone chargers connected overnight.

From a safety perspective, police officer Enric Serrano warns that leaving chargers plugged in when not in use can pose a fire hazard. While a functional charger is generally safe, defective, low-quality, or deteriorated chargers can overheat or suffer electrical failures. Such incidents can escalate into fires within seconds, particularly if the user is asleep or away from home and cannot intervene.

Regarding battery health, modern smartphones are equipped with power management systems that regulate charging to prevent damage. These devices use software to adjust or stop the flow of electricity once a certain level is reached, meaning they do not continuously overcharge. However, factors such as heat and maintaining a high charge level can still impact long-term battery lifespan. Companies like Apple utilize optimized charging features that pause the process near 80% to reduce the time a device spends at full capacity, helping to mitigate wear.
