Smartphone charging safety: Risks of overheating on beds
Safety experts are warning against charging smartphones in high-risk locations such as on beds, under pillows, or on sofas. While charging overnight is not inherently dangerous if using standard equipment, the primary risk involves overheating and potential fire hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries.
Organizations including the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) advise that soft surfaces like blankets, pillows, and mattresses can trap heat generated by the device and charger. This lack of ventilation can lead to dangerous temperature increases. Apple has also issued recommendations advising users not to sleep on devices or chargers and to ensure all charging equipment is placed in well-ventilated areas.
