Smartphone cleaning errors can cause costly damage, experts advise

Experts warn that common mistakes when cleaning smartphones can lead to permanent damage such as oxidation, short‑circuits and the need to replace parts. André Varga, director of product at JOVI, notes that many repairs stem from improper cleaning practices.

Using household alcohol, detergents or other domestic cleaners removes protective coatings and can infiltrate tiny openings. Directly applying liquid, even on water‑resistant models, is also harmful. Metal objects like needles, clips or screwdrivers inserted into the USB‑C port may cause short‑circuits or bend contacts. Abrasive materials such as paper towels or brushes scratch the screen and wear the oleophobic layer. Blowing dust with the mouth, misusing compressed air, applying excessive force, cleaning while the device is powered and connecting a charger immediately after exposure to moisture all increase the risk of failure.

The recommended approach is to use only manufacturer‑approved cleaning products or a lightly dampened microfiber cloth, avoid any liquid contact with the device, use non‑conductive tools for ports, and handle the phone gently while it is turned off.
