Smartphone connectivity and privacy risks in vehicles

Connecting smartphones to vehicle infotainment systems presents both functional benefits and significant privacy risks. Users can display navigation apps like Waze on central car screens using projection methods such as Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, or through native Android Automotive OS installations.

However, connecting a device to a rental car can expose sensitive data. Bluetooth connections may reveal contacts, identifiers, and GPS history to subsequent drivers. While USB connections via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto utilize encryption to protect data exchanges, users should remain cautious. To mitigate risks, drivers are advised to decline contact synchronization prompts and reset navigation systems before returning rental vehicles to ensure personal information and travel history are not retained.
