Smartphone costs rise amid memory shortages and smart glass privacy debates
The smartphone industry is facing rising costs in 2026 due to significant increases in component prices. According to TrendForce, DRAM memory prices rose by approximately 93–98% in the first quarter of 2026, driven by demand for AI servers. Counterpoint Research noted similar trends in mobile memory, with DRAM prices increasing by over 50% and NAND flash memory by more than 90%. This is pushing up the price range for mid-range Android devices at a time when consumers are keeping phones longer, with the average replacement cycle extending to nearly four years.
Simultaneously, the rise of smart glasses, such as those from Meta, has sparked intense privacy debates. Concerns regarding covert surveillance have led organizations like the Wetherspoons pub chain to ban recording glasses in their establishments. While Meta states its glasses include a pulsing white light to indicate recording, activists warn of potential misuse for harassment or voyeurism. Legal experts note that while recording in public is generally legal, the rapid development of AI and wearable technology is outpacing current regulatory frameworks.
