Smartphone habits and modes for managing digital distractions

Smartphone users have several options to manage digital distractions and improve focus. Placing a phone face down can prevent the screen from lighting up during notifications, which may reduce the urge to check messages and help preserve privacy by hiding sensitive information on the lock screen. Some devices, such as compatible Google Pixel models, feature a “Shhh” mode that automatically activates “Do Not Disturb” when the phone is placed face down.

For those seeking more significant disconnection, particularly before sleep, Airplane mode serves as a more radical alternative to “Do Not Disturb” mode. While “Do Not Disturb” allows for filtered notifications or exceptions for specific contacts, Airplane mode disables mobile network connections entirely. This can reduce distractions from social media and messages, while also potentially saving battery life in areas with poor signal. Notably, device alarms continue to function normally even when Airplane mode is active.
