Smartphone integration in vehicles offers utility and hardware risks
Users looking to modernize older vehicles can implement Android Auto using an old smartphone or tablet as a dedicated display. By using an application called Open Headunit, available on the Google Play Store for $4 or for free via GitHub, a device can be configured to act as a head unit. The setup process involves adjusting settings such as pixel density (DPI) to optimize the interface.
However, using smartphones as in-car navigation tools carries potential hardware risks. Mounting a phone in a vehicle can expose it to high-amplitude vibrations that may damage or degrade sensitive electromechanical components, such as the optical stabilization and autofocus mechanisms in high-end camera modules. Additionally, placing devices on windshield mounts exposes them to direct sunlight, which can negatively impact battery health and longevity over time.
