Samsung, Apple and Google have built battery‑protection features that stop charging well before 100 percent. Samsung’s “Battery Protection” caps charging at 80 percent on newer Galaxy phones. Apple’s “Optimized Battery Charging” learns a user’s daily routine and pauses the charge around 80 percent, completing the final top‑up just before the expected wake‑up time; newer iPhone 15 models also let users set a fixed ceiling between 80 and 100 percent. Google’s “Adaptive Charging” on Pixel devices activates when the phone is plugged in for long periods, such as overnight, and delays the final charge until shortly before an alarm.

The safeguards address lithium‑ion chemistry: keeping a cell at its maximum voltage for hours accelerates degradation, especially at higher temperatures. Tests cited by Battery University show a battery kept at 100 percent for a year retains only about 80 percent of its original capacity, versus 96 percent when limited to 40 percent. Heat worsens the effect, with capacity falling to 60 percent after three months at 60 °C.

While nighttime charging is not a fire risk for modern phones, using non‑original chargers or covering the device can increase temperature and hazard. Enabling the built‑in charge‑limiting settings helps extend battery lifespan without additional user effort.
