Smartphone market trends show rising costs and high regional price disparities

Global smartphone market trends indicate rising costs and shifting consumer landscapes. According to data from Deutsche Bank, Moldova ranks among the top 10 most expensive countries for the iPhone 17 Pro (256 GB), with prices reaching approximately 27,000 lei (about $1,580). This places it higher than several European nations, including Italy, Portugal, Greece, and Finland. In contrast, Japan offers the lowest prices at roughly $1,121, slightly below the United States.

Simultaneously, IDC reports a significant shift in the broader smartphone industry. Global shipments are projected to decline by 16.7% in 2026. Rising costs for RAM and storage components are driving up device prices, threatening the viability of the entry-level segment. Devices priced under $100 are seeing a sharp decline, with the segment dropping nearly 60% in the second quarter of 2026 compared to the previous year. While major brands like Apple, Samsung, and Huawei are well-positioned to maintain higher price points, smaller manufacturers may struggle to survive the rising production costs.
