Smartphone memory and storage technologies overview
Smartphones rely on two main types of memory: volatile RAM, which holds temporary data for running apps, and non‑volatile internal storage for permanent files. Most devices use LPDDR RAM, with the latest LPDDR5 offering higher speed and lower power consumption than earlier LPDDR4 variants. Internal storage is built on flash NAND, commonly in eMMC or UFS formats. UFS, especially UFS 3.1 and UFS 4.0, provides read speeds up to 4,200 MB/s, far outpacing eMMC and enabling faster app launches and multitasking. Storage capacities range from 32 GB to 1 TB, with higher tiers recommended for heavy photo or 4K video use. While microSD expansion is still offered on some models, it is becoming rarer on flagship phones. Many users also supplement local storage with cloud services such as Google Drive, iCloud or OneDrive for backup and cross‑device access.
