Smartphone navigation risks battery health and causes overheating

Using smartphones for navigation in vehicles can lead to rapid battery depletion and device overheating. This issue is caused by the simultaneous use of GPS, mobile data, high screen brightness, and processor-intensive applications, often compounded by charging the device at the same time.

Heat from direct sunlight, especially when phones are placed on dashboards, can trigger safety mechanisms in devices from manufacturers like Google, Samsung, and Apple. These systems may slow down charging, reduce performance, dim the screen, or temporarily stop charging to protect the battery. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can permanently reduce lithium-ion battery capacity.

To mitigate these risks, users can utilize features such as Google Maps’ ‘Glanceable directions’ to reduce screen-on time, download offline maps to minimize data usage, and enable dark mode to save power on OLED displays. It is also recommended to keep devices out of direct sunlight and use integrated vehicle systems like Android Auto or Apple CarPlay when available.
