Smartphone notifications disrupt cognitive concentration
A cognitive psychology study published in the journal ‘Computers in Human Behavior’ has revealed that smartphone notifications significantly disrupt concentration, even when the user does not check the device.
Conducted by researchers at the University of Lausanne, the study involved 180 participants performing the Stroop test, a task sensitive to attention lapses. The results indicated that a single notification can slow cognitive processing for approximately seven seconds. The impact is notably stronger when the alert comes from a personal contact compared to a neutral source, suggesting the brain reacts to the emotional weight of the signal.
The research highlights that the frequency of interruptions is a more critical predictor of decreased concentration than total screen time. Users who experience frequent, fragmented alerts suffer more cognitive penalties than those who spend long periods on their phones without constant interruptions.
