Smartphone notifications undermine focus and raise stress, experts say

Research shows the average adult receives about 46 push notifications a day, roughly one every 20 minutes. These frequent interruptions heighten stress, lower productivity and have been linked to 29 road deaths each year on Australian highways. Studies also confirm that what is often called “multitasking” is actually rapid task‑switching, which impairs performance on both tasks.

Experts recommend several practical steps: activate “focus” or do‑not‑disturb modes on phones, turn off non‑essential notifications, schedule specific times to check apps, and avoid screen‑time trackers that gamify usage. Engaging in immersive activities such as music, sport or other tasks that require sustained attention, and using techniques like Pomodoro timers, can also strengthen attention muscles.
