Smartphone overheating: causes and battery protection

Smartphone heating is a normal byproduct of energy conversion during operation, but excessive heat can compromise battery longevity. According to Joelton Gotz, an engineer and researcher at PUCPR, modern devices include built-in protection routines to manage thermal risks.

Key factors contributing to increased temperatures include demanding tasks such as 3D gaming, high-resolution video recording, and fast charging. Environmental factors, such as direct sunlight or leaving a device in a hot vehicle, also significantly raise the baseline temperature. High ambient heat can accelerate chemical reactions within the battery, leading to faster aging even when the device is powered off.

Regarding physical accessories, removing a phone case can assist in cooling during intense use. While the impact is minimal during routine tasks, thick cases made of silicone, TPU, or leather act as thermal insulators that hinder heat dissipation. Removing these covers can be more effective when the device is already under heavy load from gaming or rapid charging.
