Smartphone privacy indicators signal camera and microphone usage

Smartphone users on both iOS and Android devices can utilize colored display indicators to monitor privacy and sensor usage. These dots serve as built-in security features to signal when an application is accessing the microphone or camera.

On Apple iOS devices, an orange dot indicates that the microphone is in use, while a green dot signifies that the camera is active or that both the camera and microphone are being used simultaneously. On Android devices, a green dot is typically used to indicate the active use of the camera, microphone, and in some instances, GPS location.

Users can identify which specific application is accessing these sensors by checking the Control Center on iPhone or the privacy dashboard on Android. If a dot appears without an obvious reason, such as during a call or while using a camera app, it may indicate background activity by an app or the presence of malware. In such cases, users are advised to revoke app permissions through the device settings or close suspicious applications.
