Smartphone security and forensics face AI and biometric challenges

Law enforcement agencies are increasingly relying on smartphone data for criminal investigations, while simultaneously facing new technical challenges regarding data integrity and device access. Digital forensics experts note that while smartphones provide critical visual evidence, AI-driven tools can now manipulate images and videos with high realism, potentially compromising the reliability of digital proof.

In a notable case in Ohio, the FBI successfully used Apple’s Face ID to unlock a suspect's iPhone after forensic extraction attempts failed. Additionally, a legal precedent is being set in the US involving the use of a ‘duress PIN’ on the GrapheneOS operating system. An Atlanta resident was charged after using a security feature designed to wipe sensitive data during a border inspection, marking the first time a US citizen has been prosecuted for utilizing such a security function.
