Smartphone software update lifecycles and security risks

Smartphone software update lifecycles vary significantly by device tier. Flagship models currently receive up to seven years of support, while mid-range devices typically receive five to six years, and entry-level models often receive only four.

For Samsung users, specific timelines are emerging. For instance, the Galaxy S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra are expected to reach the end of Android updates in February 2027.

Operating a device without system updates poses cumulative security risks. While hardware may remain functional, the absence of system-level patches leaves vulnerabilities in the kernel or Bluetooth exploitable. Although secondary protections like Google Play Protect and browser updates provide some mitigation, they do not replace the necessity of full system security patches. Users are advised to avoid sensitive banking on outdated systems and to maintain strict application update habits to reduce the attack surface.
