Smartphone usage impacts hand health as new AI tool promotes outdoor activity
Orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Barun Dutta has warned that prolonged smartphone use can lead to physical strain on the hands and wrists. Repetitive motions, such as using a single thumb for scrolling, typing, and navigating applications, can irritate tendons and exacerbate existing conditions. Holding devices in fixed, awkward positions or using only two fingers for extended periods may result in pain, numbness, or weakness in the fingers and wrists.
In response to digital overuse, a new project called TrailMate AI has been developed. This open-weight AI companion is designed to encourage users to spend less time on screens and more time outdoors. Built using React, Vite, Python, and the Gemma model via Ollama, the tool offers nature missions, a nature-based Q&A feature, and a field journal to help users engage more deeply with their surroundings.
