Smartphone usage trends and restrictions in German schools
Data from the 2024 KIM study indicates a significant rise in smartphone ownership among children as they transition to secondary school. While only 33 percent of children aged eight to nine own a smartphone, that figure jumps to 63 percent for the ten-to-eleven age group. Another survey suggests that 89 percent of children aged ten to thirteen possess their own device.
In response to digital distractions, the Christoph-Probst-Realschule in Neu-Ulm has implemented a policy where students must store their mobile phones in locked, padded cases during morning hours. School leadership noted that the mere presence of a smartphone can disrupt concentration. While some students initially viewed the measure as an infringement on privacy, many reported improved focus and a reduced urge to check social media during class.
