Neck strain increases significantly due to smartphone and laptop use

Medical experts warn that frequent use of smartphones and laptops is causing significant mechanical strain on the human neck. While an upright head exerts approximately 12 pounds (5.4 kg) of pressure on the neck, tilting the head forward to look at screens can increase this load to approximately 60 pounds (27.2 kg).

Research indicates that prolonged screen time is a major contributor to neck pain. A scoping review published in Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation found that using a smartphone for more than six hours per day is linked to 2.78 times the odds of experiencing neck pain. Experts note that the issue is compounded by the duration of use and the lack of movement, which can lead to stiffness, reduced mobility, and potential long-term spinal complications.

To mitigate these effects, specialists recommend regular movement breaks, conscious postural adjustments, and specific exercises to improve spinal flexibility and strength.
