Smartphone use linked to fragmented attention and ‘smartphone brain’ symptoms
Continuous smartphone use is increasingly linked to various cognitive and physical complaints, often colloquially referred to as ‘smartphone brain’. While not an official medical diagnosis, neurologist Dr. Gaurav Batra explains that the term describes symptoms such as fragmented attention, sleep disturbances, and headaches resulting from constant device interaction.
The issue extends beyond mere screen time; the frequency of interruptions plays a critical role. Constant task-switching—such as pausing work to check social media notifications—can lead to fragmented attention and difficulty maintaining long-term concentration. Research suggests that repeated exposure to rapid content changes and notifications may impact cognitive control and brain networks associated with attention.
