Smartphone use on the toilet linked to increased hemorrhoid risk
Research suggests that using smartphones while on the toilet may increase the risk of developing hemorrhoids due to prolonged sitting. A 2025 study led by Chethan Ramprasad at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston examined the link between mobile phone use and anal health by surveying 125 adults undergoing preventive colonoscopies.
In the study, 66 percent of participants reported using their smartphones during toilet visits. The extended time spent sitting, often caused by distractions such as social media or videos, can place undue pressure on the anal area.
According to the German Federal Ministry of Health, more than half of all adults will experience issues related to enlarged hemorrhoids during their lifetime. Other contributing factors to the condition include constipation, straining, obesity, pregnancy, and age-related weakening of supporting tissue.
