Smartphones Advance as Youth Turn to Minimalist Dumbphones

Mobile device technology continues to evolve rapidly. In Germany and Austria, 4G is now standard with speeds around 1 Gbps, while 5G promises data rates up to ten times faster, enabling smoother mobile gaming, high‑quality video streaming and new wear‑able integrations as the industry moves toward a future "Web 4.0" ecosystem.

At the same time, a growing segment of younger users is abandoning feature‑rich smartphones for simple "dumbphones" or feature phones. Traffic to the online guide Dumbphone Finder has risen twelve‑fold between 2022 and 2025, and its device database has doubled from 45 to 91 models. Popular minimalist devices include the Nokia 2780 Flip, the Punkt MP02 4G, Mudita Kompact and Light Phone II, the latter reporting a 100 % sales increase from 2023‑2024 and over 100 000 active users. Industry voices note that the shift reflects a desire to cut screen time while retaining core communication functions.
