Smartphones trap users at night, undermining sleep

Mobile phones are engineered to hold users' attention, especially late at night. Notifications, vibrations and visual cues activate the brain's alert system, while blue‑light emission hampers the transition to sleep. Fatigue reduces self‑control, making it harder to resist scrolling when the brain's willpower is depleted. The unpredictable rewards of social‑media feeds act like a slot‑machine, keeping the brain in a reward loop, and repeated use in bed rewires the brain to associate the bedroom with stimulation rather than rest.

Experts suggest practical steps to break the cycle: keep the phone away from the bed, enable automatic "Do Not Disturb" schedules, use a traditional alarm clock, and replace screen time with a brief bedtime routine such as reading a few pages or practicing slow breathing. These measures can lower cognitive arousal and help the body shift into sleep more easily.
