Wearable technology shifts toward AI health monitoring and intervention

The wearable technology market is evolving from simple activity tracking toward advanced health monitoring and AI-driven intervention. Companies like Samsung are integrating BioActive sensors to measure blood oxygen and body composition, while Apple is leveraging Apple Intelligence to provide dynamic fitness recommendations and audio intelligence features, such as recording ambient sounds for users with hearing impairments.

At IFA Berlin, ZenoWell showcased the Luna Plus, a device utilizing transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) to provide non-invasive wellness benefits through the ear. This represents a shift toward wearables that actively intervene in physiological states rather than just logging data.

However, experts caution regarding the precision of these devices. A study from the University of Michigan suggests that many smartwatch metrics, such as sleep stages, calorie burns, and hydration levels, are algorithmic estimates rather than direct measurements. Researchers advise that while metrics like heart rate and step counts are generally reliable, users should focus on tracking long-term trends rather than treating individual readings as precise laboratory-grade data.
