Smartwatch manufacturers weigh RTOS against Wear OS for battery efficiency
The smartwatch market is seeing a growing tension between the feature-rich ecosystems of Wear OS and the superior battery life offered by Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS). While Wear OS provides deep Android integration and a vast app catalog, its high power consumption often requires daily charging.
Reports suggest that major manufacturers like Samsung and Motorola may be pivoting toward lighter operating systems to compete with brands like Huawei and Xiaomi. Internal code for a Samsung device, referred to as ‘galaxy_rtos_watch’, indicates a move toward a custom RTOS or an evolution of Tizen. Similarly, leaks regarding a potential Motorola Watch Ultra suggest the brand may bypass Wear OS in favor of an RTOS to achieve battery life lasting up to 13 days.
In the context of existing Wear OS devices, such as the Google Pixel Watch, software updates are often distributed gradually across different regions to mitigate bugs. Users sometimes attempt to bypass these staggered rollouts by changing their Google account region, though this does not guarantee immediate access to new features.
