Smartwatch metrics: how to use fitness tracker data effectively

Modern smartwatches and fitness trackers collect vast amounts of data, but not all metrics provide equal practical value for optimizing athletic performance and recovery. Experts suggest focusing on a few validated indicators rather than becoming overwhelmed by secondary metrics or proprietary scores that may lack transparency.

Key reliable metrics include Heart Rate Variability (HRV), which measures nervous system flexibility, and VO2 max, an indicator of aerobic capacity. While optical heart rate sensors are effective during stable activities, they may lose precision during high-intensity intervals. Additionally, estimates for calorie consumption and VO2 max can have error margins of 10-15 percent compared to laboratory tests.

To use these devices effectively, users should prioritize observing long-term trends rather than absolute daily values. For instance, a declining HRV combined with a rising resting heart rate can signal overtraining or poor sleep, suggesting a need for reduced intensity or increased rest.
