Smartwatch technology advances in health monitoring and lightweight app design
Smartwatch technology is increasingly focusing on specialized health monitoring and lightweight user experiences. Advanced features like ECG (electrocardiogram) allow users to monitor the heart's electrical activity, while SpO2 sensors estimate blood oxygen saturation. While these tools provide valuable data, they are intended for health management assistance rather than clinical diagnosis.
Newer hardware, such as the Honor Watch 6 Pro, is integrating complex monitoring capabilities including blood pressure assessment and glucose management through external device synchronization. These devices also feature cardiac risk warnings that can trigger emergency alerts if severe irregularities are detected.
On the software side, the development of the HarmonyOS ecosystem is enabling a shift toward “subtraction” in smartwatch app design. Rather than replicating complex smartphone functions, new applications are focusing on high-frequency, short-duration tasks—such as rapid health logging, micro-learning, or gesture-based games—that leverage the unique physical proximity of wearable sensors to the body.
