Smartwatches emerge as safe alternatives to smartphones for children

As parents navigate the transition from childhood to smartphone use, wearable technology is emerging as a middle-ground solution for connectivity and safety.

Bouygues Telecom is expanding its tiered approach to digital maturity with the launch of the Kids Watch TCL MT48. Scheduled for release in mid-October 2026, the device is designed for children aged 9 and up. To prevent early exposure to social media and unrestricted internet browsing, the watch lacks a web browser and social platforms. Instead, it allows for calls, video calls, and messaging strictly limited to parent-approved contacts. Technical upgrades in the new model include a larger 1.68-inch screen, dual-frequency GPS for enhanced geolocation, IP68 water and dust resistance, and a magnetic charger. Safety features include an SOS button, customizable safe zones, and a ‘School Mode’ to minimize distractions during class.

Similarly, the ICE smart kids 4G offers a closed ecosystem designed to provide geolocation and secure communication without the risks of a full smartphone. While providing features like mini-games and AI-driven stories, the device requires a monthly subscription and utilizes a proprietary Nano-SIM. Users should note that while it includes a magnetic charging cable, it does not come with a power adapter.
