Smartwatches Linked to Early Disease Detection and Skin Irritation Issues

Smartwatches equipped with heart‑rate, sleep‑tracking and activity sensors are being promoted as tools that can flag early signs of medical conditions. They can identify patterns suggestive of sleep apnea, cardiac arrhythmias, elevated diabetes risk and hypertension, offering users data that may prompt medical consultation. Manufacturers stress that the devices are complementary to professional diagnosis.

Continuous wrist wear, however, can lead to a dermatitis condition dubbed “watch rot.” The combination of heat, sweat, dead‑skin cells and trapped moisture under the band creates an environment for irritation and microbial growth, causing redness, itching and burning. Experts advise regular cleaning of the watch and strap, thorough drying of the skin, and using breathable materials such as perforated silicone or nylon, especially in hot weather. Persistent symptoms should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
